What is a Slot?

A slit or other narrow opening, especially in a door, wall, or fence. Also, the space in a game board between two face-off circles on an ice hockey rink.

In gambling, a slot is a position where a player can line up to receive a pass or kick. It is often occupied by players who can run the most quickly, such as tight-ends and primary wide receivers. The position is a major factor in the success of teams that play a fast style of football, as it allows them to pass to these players and avoid sacks.

The slot> element is part of the Web Components technology suite and provides a way to create named slots in a document. For more information about the slot element, see Using slots.
