In the United States, Poker was a favored game during the Wild West period. Characters such as gun slinger Wild Bill Hickok and dentist turned outlaw Doc Holliday played it. Researchers later discovered that other countries, including France, had similar games.

Five-card stud is played with three face up cards and one face down card. It was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. But it was not a popular game during the 1950s and 1960s, and it was not played in one-tenth of high-stakes games in the U.S.
A community card game such as Omaha or Draw Poker is the most popular form of poker today. These games have a set of common betting rounds, and the hand ranking system used is the same.
When a player’s hand is ranked, the rank of each card is inversely proportional to the frequency with which it appears in the deck. For example, a pair of aces is the lowest possible pair, while a straight flush beats a pair of jacks.
