Why is it That Processed Food Can Be Harmful to Your Health?

Food is any material consumed to give nutrition to organisms. It may be in the form of a liquid, solid, or semi-solid. Food is generally of animal, plant or fungi origin, and has various nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, or iron, or other substances needed by the body. The word ‘food’ comes from the Latin ‘agriculus’, which means food.

There are many factors that affect the nutritional quality of food. One such factor is the type of food. Animal products, especially meat, eggs and dairy products, contain high levels of fat, whereas plant products, especially vegetables, have relatively low fat content. Therefore, animal-based foods provide higher percentages of energy, carbohydrates and protein; whereas plant foods, particularly vegetables, provide higher percentages of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Thus, a diet rich in animal products results in high rates of fat, whereas a diet rich in plant products results in a high rate of carbohydrates and protein.

However, even though the food industry tries to convince us that we need to eat a diet rich in carbohydrates, this is not the case in reality and eating processed food can actually be harmful to our health. Processed food like canned goods and chips and high sugar content food take out the real food from the purest edible nature and replace it with chemicals and flavourings. So while you may be eating real food, you may also be eating some processed food.
