The food pyramid is a system designed to help individuals determine the amount of food they need to eat in order to maintain a healthy weight and get enough energy to perform normal daily functions. Basically, food is any material consumed to supply the body with necessary nutrients in order to maintain an adult human’s body weight. Basically, food consists of any material that is consumed to supply a human’s body with necessary nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, or fats. Each food type has specific nutrients that are vital to human development and maintenance. Therefore, different types of foods provide different nutrients to various human beings.
Generally, lean meats, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes, dairy products, and fats are considered to be the main sources of nutrients for the average person. Fruits and vegetables are considered to be the most important food groups because they are rich sources of carbohydrates, vitamins, and fat while animal products, which include fish, poultry, and meat, are the richest sources of protein. Animal foods are rich sources of fat, but this fat is not good for human nutrition. Nevertheless, a person can acquire fat from certain kinds of plant oils, although these kinds of fat are much healthier than that from meat.
As you can see, there are many different food types that provide different nutrients to humans. However, it is not possible for every single food type to be the ultimate food source because not all people are willing to eat the same kinds of food. Therefore, it is important for a diet to consist of a large variety of foods so that a person gets the complete nourishment needed to live a healthy and productive life.
