Online Poker Wars – Protecting Consumers and Creating Online Gambling Tradition

Online poker is simply the most popular game of card played throughout the world. In fact, it is one of the most popular games of all as far as card games go. Poker is a simple to learn and play card game that is currently one of the top ranking games on all of the leading casino websites. As a result, online poker has been partially responsible for a significant increase in the amount of poker enthusiasts world wide.

The recent surge in online gambling has prompted the formation of numerous online poker tournaments in an effort to attract more players and continue the popularity of online poker. Unfortunately, the majority of these tournaments are based outside of the United States, which is ironic considering that online gambling should be illegal in the US under federal laws. The European Commission as well has taken a stance against online gambling and recently proposed some incredibly strict European gambling laws that would effectively ban all forms of online gambling in the EU. While the European Commission is pursuing a policy that would severely curtail online poker in the EU, the Las Vegas Sands Corp. has applied for state gambling regulations in Nevada that would essentially eliminate online gambling altogether. These recent developments are troubling not only because of the potential regulation of online gambling but the effect that such measures would have on the burgeoning online poker industry.

In the past several years, several states across the United States have passed laws that require casinos and poker sites to require a mandatory deposit from players. This deposit is often ten or twenty dollars and is used to gamble with at the casino or online poker site. Although many of the state laws do vary from state to state, it is important to note that no online poker games will be permitted to operate in states that do not support their respective games. For example, in Michigan no online poker games will be able to be operated if the required deposit is less than one hundred dollars. Online gambling is simply not allowed within the state of Michigan.
